Aren’t We Glad We Live in California!?

Check out this article that ran in yesterday’s New York Post.  This couple, Zaarath and Christopher Prokop — and their two cats — live in the smallest apartment in the city, a 175-square-foot (no it’s not a typo) “microstudio” in Morningside Heights.  They paid $150,000 for the apartment just three months ago.

The apartment is just 14.9 feel long and 10 feet wide and is about as narrow as a subway car and as claustrophobic as a jail cell.  This one had us all pondering how long could we live next to your loved one in an apartment the size of a jail cell.  Do you think it would bring you closer together or would you soon become an episode of the 80s classic Moonlighting?

Now just to give you an idea of what you can get for $150,000 in other parts of the country, we took a look online.  Check it out:

In Salt Lake City Utah, you can get this two bedroom, one bath single family residence for $150,000.  The local Coldwell Banker Realtor describe the property as “Perfect for 1st time buyers wanting an $8,000 tax credit. Wonderful bungalow.  Super cute inside. Huge 900 Sq Ft garage! Great location within walking distance of schools, churches and parks. This is priced to sell quickly!

In Fargo, North Dakoa, you can get a new construction condo for $96,725 to $152,580, depending on the floorplan.  The local Coldwell Banker Realtor describes the property as “Wonderful amenities-Secured building-Underground garage-Elevator-Appliances. Small pets allowed.”

In sunny California, you can even get a three bedroom, two bath starter home in Gilroy, a little suburb just on the outskirts of the Bay Area for the bargain price of $136,950.  The local Coldwell Banker Realtor describes the property as “Great starter home or an investment property.  The property includes a basement that is approximately 150 square feet (remember that’s the size of the New York property) and includes one bedroom and one bath.  Located near downtown Gilroy and easy access to Highway 101.”

So, now after seeing where $150,000 would take you, where could you see yourself landing?

– A cozy flat in the heart of NYC
– A comfy two bedroom near BYU
– A posh new construction condo in chilly Fargo
– A three bedroom starter in sunny Cali
